First Encounter with Francis of Assisi: Damien Vorreux, who died in 1988, was a French scholar who began to publish French translations of the early Franciscan documents in the early 1950s. His deep knowledge of those documents and his understanding of Francis were the inspiration for this classic presentation of Francis of Assisi. Published in French in 1973 and first offered in English by Franciscan Press in 1979, Jean-François Godet-Calogeras – who worked with Vorreux – combines the latest scholarship and the most current English translation of the Early Documents with his own translation of the writings of Francis in offering this new edition of First Encounter with Francis of Assisi. This short text is an excellent introduction to Francis and the world in which he lived.
“Although this little book is about 40 years old, it continues to deliver what its title promises: a first encounter with Francis of Assisi for those who do not know much about him, but after having seen or heard him mentioned somewhere – most of the time related to legendary stories – are intrigued by that man of a small Italian city who lived eight hundred years ago. “First Encounter with Francis of Assisi” does not have the pretention to be a biography, but is definitely a concise and solid introduction to Francis, describing the world of his time, the milestones of his journey of life, and the essential elements of his spirituality.
In addition to providing a basic outline of his life, the author explores major aspects of his continuing influence in our time. While many historic interpretations of events in his life have been uncovered since this was first published, the Franciscan Institute wants to keep this study available as a tool that can help many—particularly collaborators in Franciscan works and institutions—know this amazing Christian better.”

An English translation of François d’Assise ou le pouvoir en question. In this presentation, it is not the question of poverty that holds center stage as the cause of the controversies within the early Franciscan fraternity. Rather, paradoxically, it is the question of Francis’s humility.

Although Francis had no formal training in theology, he has left us a profound yet warmly human vision of the Christian life. In this study, the author breaks with custom and focuses not on the personality of Francis but on his message as we find it in his writings: a rich, balanced message that teaches a vibrant spirituality centered on God and humanity.

An English translation of La malaventura di Francesco d’Assisi: per un uso storico delle leggende francescane
This first of three volumes by Professor Dalarun, each originally published in either Italian or French, represents a highly important and unique contribution to a series of viatal questions concerning the Franciscan movement in the Middle Ages. This publication will certainly generate lively discussion and a deeper understanding of the Franciscan phenomenon. In a tone that is profoundly personal and to the point, Dalarun offers to serve as a methodological guide in the renewed interest in the famous “Franciscan Question”: how best to read, interpret and relate the early biographies to the historical Francis.

The Salutation of the Virtues can be characterized as a poetic reminder or even a poetic testament which St. Francis composes so that the brothers may take to heart and never forget the virtues, Gods holy forces, that are to shape the brotherhood in its continuous struggle to build an alternative society against the forces of evil that are threatening the brotherhood and its original ideals.

By John R. H. Moorman
Anglican Bishop and renowned medievalist John Moorman writes in his preface to this terrific, short biography of Francis of Assisi that Francis has something to say to people of all kinds. He was a mystic with a special interest in, and understanding of, nature. He was a poet, the first to write in verse in any modern language. He was a man of great courage, risking his life in carrying out his ideals, He inspired large numbers of men to give away all that they possessed and live as vagabonds, begging their bread from door to door, All these things were important, and all combine to make him a very remarkable man. But perhaps the thing about him which appeals to us most today is the challenge which he threw down to the standards and values of the ordinary, secular life of man.

There was a passion, an intense energy of love that drove Francis to center his entire life in Christ. Christ was, indeed, the teacher of his heart. This book concentrates on the Christological dimension of Francis’s thought seen through the prism of his writings and against the background of the world in which he lived.

De Beer does not aim to examine the saint’s life from testimonies written once that life on earth had been concluded; rather he inquires how those who knew Francis first hand encountered him while he was still alive. He attempts to discover how Francis's contemporaries experienced him close up. How did they criticize him? How did they imagine him?
