Metaphysical Insights of Claude Tresmontant - COMING SOON!!!
by Brian Cudahy
The late French scholar Claude Tresmontant (1925-1997) remains largely unknown outside France, yet his 48 published books convey a distinctive message that deserves broader recognition. Although Tresmontant held a degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne and taught there, his work encompasses philosophy, theology, and Sacred Scripture, making him difficult to categorize.
His first published book, "A Study of Hebrew Thought" (1953), argues that the foundations of Christian philosophy stem from the ancient Hebrew worldview. This theme recurs throughout his subsequent writings. Tresmontant cites Henri Bergson, Maurice Blondel, and Teilhard de Chardin as influences, while also expressing reservations about ancient Greek philosophy. Late in his career, he discovered the medieval Franciscan John Duns Scotus, whose insights resonated with his own. In a brief study commemorating Scotus's beatification, Tresmontant referred to him as “the future of the Church.” The exploration of Tresmontant’s work raises the question of whether his insights could contribute to the future of the Church as well.
