Description:

John Duns Scotus - Early Oxford Lecture on Individuation

Allan B. Wolter, OFM

The problem on individuation, because of its theological implications, was a particularly controversial topic in university circles in the late thirteenth century, particularly at Paris and Oxford. The Lectura text translated in this book is from the first bachelor lectures in Oxford by John Duns Scotus on theological issues occasioned by Peter Lombard's Sentences.

Book Two of Peter's collection of opinions of Fathers of the Church, which served as a university textbook, began with a discussion of angels. Scotus tells us Distinction Three "treats of the personality of the angels" and it was this that prompted him to raise these six questions about the individuation of a material substance.

John Duns Scotus - Political and Economic Philosophy

Allan B. Wolter, OFM

Although Scotus’s primary philosophical reputation is as a metaphysician, he did have certain definitive ideas about politics and the morality of the market place. This volume presents two manuscripts of Book IV of Scotus’s Ordinatio, which present his political and economic philosophy. The critical edition of the Latin text is included, together with parallel English translation. ISBN: 978-1-57659-172-7

Scotus and Ockham Selected Essays

Allan B. Wolter, OFM

Produced over a career of six decades, Allan Wolter's monumental editions, translations, commentaries and studies constitute by far the largest and most influential body of scholarship by any modern author. The present collections brings together twelve of Wolter's seminal articles, most of which have never been reprinted, as well as two new studies written for this volume.

They range over the length of Wolter's career and represent the breadth of his interests: Scotus's literary production and academic career, his metaphysics, ethics, and theologoy, and his relation to Ockham and other Franciscan theologians, This is a valuable collection for anyone working in late medieval philosophy or theology.Stephen Dumont, University of Notre Dame. ISBN: 978-1-57659-188-8
